Assignment #11 – Final Essay Blog

Oppression means cruel or unjust treatment that is prolonged. The difference between the violent resistance and non-violent resistance is that in violent resistance you use the threat of physical pain to the oppressors and non-violent resistance is when you use peaceful means where no one is harmed and the oppressors are shamed into changing. Agency means the ability to determine the outcome of one’s own life. Oppressed people should use non-violent resistance to gain agency because during the Oscar Grant protest they were threatened for their life if they were peaceful, in the MLK speech he states that non-violent resistance gives tangible and better results, and in Malala’s speech she supports being peaceful and forgiving to everybody.

First of all, oppressed people should use non-violent resistance to gain agency because during the Oscar Grant protest police threatened protesters for their life if they did not protest peacefully. The document that I will be providing you is about the Murder of Oscar Grant at the Fruitvale Bart Station in Oakland, California who was shot in the back when he was already in a position of surrendering. This document is an excerpt from an article titled Centuries of rage: The murder of Oscar Grant III” on the website http://sfbayview.com/2015/02/centuries-of-rage-the-murder-of-oscar-grant-iii/  and was written by Malaika Kambon on February 25, 2015. The information from this document is not trustworthy because they don’t have any evidence of them witnessing the event and that they have a reason to give biased information due to the fact this protest for some eyes, see it as a racial problem which would lead into different opinions and biased information. A quote from this document states, “…Mehserle’s partner, Tony Pirone, held Grant down with both hands and a knee on his head and neck. Both Pirone and BART Officer Marysol Domenici assaulted, hurled racial epithets and threatened to taser and/or kill Oscar Grant’s five friends who were on the BART platform with him at the time of his murder.” The evidence that I have provided shows that oppressed people should use non-violent resistance to gain agency because if Oscar Grant’s five friends that was there to witness his murder were to retaliate violent it would result in them getting injured or even worse death. This supports my claim in using non-violent resistance to gain agency because it is a much safer way in protesting than losing you life or getting injured in the process.

In addition, oppressed people should use non-violent resistance to gain agency because being peaceful and forgiving to everybody will give you better results than harming others using violent resistance. The document that I will be using is about a how a girl name Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by Taliban but it won’t stop her because she feels even stronger after getting shot and she wants education for every child by being peaceful and loving everyone, even the Taliban who shot her. The document is an excerpt of a speech given by 16 year old named Malala Yousafzai to the United Nations General Assembly on July 12, 2013. The information of this article is reliable because Malala Yousafzai said this herself to the United Nations General Assembly and has no reason to be bias. A quote from this speech states, “This is the philosophy of nonviolence that I have learned from Gandhi, Bacha Khan and Mother Teresa. And this is the forgiveness that I have learned from my father and from my mother. This is what my soul is telling me: be peaceful and love everyone.” This demonstrates that oppressed people should use non-violent resistance to gain agency because Malala Yousafzai is following the philosophy of nonviolence which the 3 role models that she mentioned were very successful in doing. This is why oppressed people should use nonviolent resistance to gain agency because you have a much better chance of gaining agency instead of fighting back which will make the oppressors less likely to hear your opinion and what you have to say.

Lastly, oppressed people should use non-violent resistance to gain agency because Dr. Martin Luther King stated himself that using nonviolent resistance will give you tangible results than using violent resistance which does not give consistent results like using non-violent resistance can do. The document that I will use to support my claim is about Dr. Martin Luther King doing a speech and talking about his opinion on a violent resistance that was occuring at the time and that he is committed in using non-violent resistance because it’s the best weapon in getting best results. This document is an excerpt from a speech titled “The Other America” delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King at Grosse Pointe High School on March 14th, 1968. The information from this document is reliable because Dr. Martin Luther King is a primary source, has no reason to be bias, and he has stated this himself. The quote from this document states, “I am still committed to militant, powerful, massive, non-violence as the most potent weapon in grappling with the problem from a direct action point of view. I’m absolutely convinced that a riot merely intensifies the fears of the white community while relieving the guilt. And I feel that we must always work with an effective, powerful weapon and method that brings about tangible results.” This implies that oppressed people should use non-violent resistance to gain agency because using non-violent resistance is better in giving your point across to the oppressors rather than making them scared. The results from using non-violent resistance to gain agency is better than using violent resistance because you gain more consistent results than violent resistance instead of scaring the oppressors to death.

Assignment#9 Oppression Essay

Oppressed people means people that have been dealing with cruel and unjust treatment that is prolonged. Systems of oppression mean systems that are meant to oppress people or something. Levels of oppression means oppression that goes even deeper than system but because of laws, rules, policies, how people behaved toward another and when people choose to believe negative narratives about themselves. Some ways oppressed people experience the different systems of oppression and levels of oppression are that everyday an Afghan girl faces being thrown acid at their face or people poisoning their water and that people are still being treated poorly from others because of laws that were made in the past but even now people are treating others poorly by killing them because of laws that were made in the past which they still believe in.

First of all, some ways oppressed people experience the different systems of oppression and levels of oppression are that everyday an Afghan girl faces being thrown acid at their face or people poisoning their water when they are trying to get an education because men don’t want them to learn about their rights and be able to control them which would be considered a social system of oppression or interpersonal level of oppression. In a document written online it talks about how women and girls are being thrown acid at their faces and terrorist also poisoning their water just to stop the girls from getting a free education so they don’t learn their rights as a human being and a woman. This document was an articled titled “Acid attacks, poison: What Afghan girls risk by going to school” which was posted on the website CNN.com and it was written by Allie Torgan on March 17, 2016. In this document it says, “Terrorists will stop at nothing to keep Afghan girls from receiving an education …”Every day, you hear that somebody’s thrown acid at a girl’s face … or they poison their water. “It is heartbreaking to see the way these terrorists treat … women,” said Jan, 68. “In their eyes, a women is an object that they can control. They are scared that when these girls get an education, they will become aware of their rights as women and as a human being.”” This evidence shows that the girls and woman who are the “oppressed people” are experiencing a social system of oppression and an interpersonal level of oppression because of how the terrorist are behaving toward the girls by treating them inhumanely so that they won’t know their rights as humans and that the men and terrorist will have power over them. They are treating them inhumanely because terrorist poisoning and grenading girls who are just minding their own business and trying to get an education is just sad and cruel. All they wanted was a education which everyone in the world should be offered to have but these terrorist are killing these innocent girls just because they want an education.

Last of all, some ways oppressed people experience the different systems of oppression and levels of oppression are that people are still being treated inhumanely from others because of laws that were made in the past but even now people are treating others poorly by killing them which could be considered a social system of oppression and a institutional level of oppression. In a document it talks about how a white woman later admitted in killing a young black boy for reasons that she says were later found false, which was that Emmett Till grabbed her and was sexually harassing her, and she was also  never retried as long with other suspects and not found guilty of the crime she committed. This document was a quote from an article on the New York Times Newspaper’s Website which was titled “Woman Linked to 1955 Emmett Till Murder Tells Historian Her Claims Were False” and it was written by Richard Perez-Peña on January 27, 2017. In this quote it says, “But all these years later, a historian says that the woman has broken her silence, and acknowledged that the most incendiary parts of the story she and others told about Emmett — claims that seem tame today but were more than enough to get a black person killed in Jim Crow-era Mississippi — were false. The woman, Carolyn Bryant Donham, spoke to Timothy B. Tyson… who has written a book, “The Blood of Emmett Till,” to be published next week. In it, he wrote that she said of her long-ago allegations that Emmett grabbed her and was menacing and sexually crude toward her, “that part is not true.”” This evidence shows a social system of oppression and institutional level of oppression because it talks about how Carolyn Bryant Donham who later admitted to the murder of Emmett Till behaved toward Emmett Till yet was not found guilty at all because they could not be retried and that she acted this way because she thought that based on rules from the past she could of done this without getting punished.

Assignment #8

Power means the ability to control events and the behaviors of other people. Marginalize means to put off to the side , or make less important. Exploit means to take unfair advantage of someone for your own benefit. People with power are able to marginalize and exploit people with different identities because they are able to colonize the other people, they can punish them whenever the find suitable and they can treat someone with a different identity luxuriously and later dismember them in public view.

First of all, people with power are able to marginalize and exploit people with different identities because the people with power are able to colonize people with different identities. In document 3 that I will be using and presenting a quote from shortly is about the Spanish exploiting the Native Americans labor after colonizing there territory. The document is a quote from the book titled “Colonial America” and was written by Jerome R. Reich in 1994. In document 3 it states, “Once the conquest of the Native Americans had been completed the next task was to exploit their labor.” As you can see after the Spanish have finished their conquest on the Native Americans their next task was to exploit their labor. This supports my claim because the Spanish who has power over the Native Americans are now trying to marginalize and exploit them by exploiting their labor after colonizing them.

Furthermore, people with power are able to marginalize and exploit people with different identities because when suitable they can punish those with different identities by any means necessary. According to a document, it talks about these 4 different articles(rules) that were created to enforce power on black slaves in French territory in America. Document 4 is articles from sections of “The Code Noir” ,which were basically laws made for black slaves and was written by the King of France in March, 1685. In article 42 of “The Code Noir” it states, “The masters will have the right, when they’ll estimate it’s necessary, to chain up the slaves and make beat them by sticks and ropes.” This evidence demonstrates that people with power are able to marginalize and exploit people with different identities because they can do whatever they want to black slaves for their own benefit, such as make them work until they die without a break and punish them whenever they find necessary.

Last of all, people with power are able to marginalize and exploit people with different identities because the people with power are exploiting an enemy warrior by treating him luxuriously and then dismembering him and killing him. In document 4, it talks about the story of an enemy warrior being treated luxuriously like the god, Tezcatlipoca, and then sacrificing him in a year. The document is from the words of an unknown Aztec Scribe in 1529. In document 4 is states, “This seasoned warrior, whom we change from a human into the god Tezcatlipoca, can have no blemish upon his body, and is treated like our most royal family member during the long year leading up to his sacrifice.” This shows that someone with power are able to marginalize and exploit people with different identities because Aztec people have the power to turn an enemy warrior into the god “Tezcatlipoca” and later exploit him by dismembering him in the public for all to see. To elaborate this shows a political system of oppression because the Aztecs made the decision to treat the enemy warrior like a god and later sacrifice him.
