Assignment #6

What is something that you learned about Christopher Columbus that  you did not know before?

Something that I learned about Christopher Columbus that I did not know before was that he turned Native American children into sex slaves and sold them off.

Do think Christopher Columbus deserves his own holiday?  Explain your answer.

No I do not think Christopher Columbus deserves his own holiday. He does not deserve to own his own holiday because he caused many wars to happen before American or USA was founded. He had little Native American children become sex slaves which is now very illegal in America. He had also started a mass killing which causes 3 or more million Native Americans to die.

Assignment #5

Identity is that qualities of a person that define who they are. A dominant narrative is a story that people in a position of privilege tell about someone who is not. A counter narrative is a story or perspective that people who are marginalized tell about themselves. It is important to tell a counter narrative about dominant narratives people say about your identity because what they say won’t always be true because they don’t know how you truly feel because they aren’t you. Only you would know what is right and wrong about you. A counter narrative against a dominant narrative can show people what is really true.To begin with a dominant narrative is a story that people in a position of privilege tell about someone who is not. What they have to do with me personally is that their are dominant narratives about my ethnicity and race which I don’t like. A picture that shows a dominant narrative about me on my shadowbox is that Asians eat dogs and cats but I’m Asian I own a dog and I never ate a dog or cat in my life. That picture is an example of dominant narratives because that is a stereotype that someone with privilege or power that made lots of people believe that is true about Asians. Another picture that shows a dominant narrative about me that I am using is that Asians can’t open their eyes and how their eyes are squinted. That picture is an example of dominant narrative because it is a stereotype about Asians that a lot of people believe is true about Asians but it is not.

First of all a counter narrative is a story or perspective of a person that is marginalized tell about themselves. What they have to do with me personally is that they rebel against the dominant narrative. One of the pictures I plan to use on my shadowbox that shows a counter narrative about one of my identities is that a man saying not all Asians eat dogs. This picture shows an example of a counter narrative because it is saying that the dominant narrative of all Asians eat dogs is not true. Another picture I plan to use on my shadowbox I plan to use to show a counter narrative about me is an Asian man being able to open his eyes completely. This is an example of a counter narrative because there is a dominant narrative about how all Asians can’t open their eyes which is completely wrong.First of all identity is the qualities that represent who you are. One of the pictures that I plan to use on my shadowbox to show an example of one of my identities is that I like anime. This pictures is an example of identity because anime is a quality that represents me. Another picture I plan to use on my shadowbox that shows an example of one of my identities is that I love to eat food. This shows an example of identity because food is a way to represent me.

Assignment #4

  1. What RACE do you identify yourself as?  Explain your answer. I didn’t put myself into the category or race of Asian because only people with privilege and power can identify people into a certain race but I would say if they did then I would be Asian because I look a certain way most Asians do.
  2. What NATIONALITY do you identify yourself as?  Explain your answer. The nationality I identify as is American because nationality is determined by the country in which you were born in and I was born in America so that would make my nationality American.
  3. What is an ETHNICITY you identify yourself with?  Explain your answer. An ethnicity I identity myself as is Vietnamese because that’s who I identify myself as based on my culture group and ethnicity means how someone identifies themselves based on their culture groups of people they connect with.
  4. OPTIONAL:  What GENDER IDENTITY do you identify yourself as? The gender identity I identify myself as is heterosexual male.
  5. Why do you think Question #4 was optional?  Explain your answer. I think question #4 was optional because you chose what you identify is and there are more than 2 possibilities. It is not a question where there is only one answer it is a question that you chose what you identify as.

Assignment #3

Question 1:  Describe one of your Chosen Identities on this identity map.  What is it?  Why did you choose this identity?

One of my chosen identities on my identity map was anime. Anime is like japanese cartoons and is very popular around the world. I choose this identity because I watched Anime all my life and I enjoy watching it.

Question 2:  Describe one of your Assigned Identities on this identity map.  What is it?  Why is this an identity something that is fixed for you, and cannot be changed?

One of my assigned identities on my identity map is that I was born in Oakland, California. This assigned identity is my country of birth which no one can change unless it’s illegal. That is why it is fixed to me.

Assignment #2 My Avatar

Question 1:  Do you think the cartoon avatar of yourself truly shows what you look like?  Explain why, or why not.

Yes I think the cartoon avatar of myself truly shows what I look like. I think it does because  I am an Asian American wearing glasses with a black hoodie which is actually what I am wearing right now.

Question 2:  Which parts of the cartoon avatar show chosen identities?  Which parts show assigned identities? Explain your answers.

Wearing glasses, wearing a black hoodie and my hair style are all chosen identities that I chose for myself. My skin tone, hair color and my ears are all assigned identities that I was assigned at birth from DNA and genes.

Assignment #1

What is something about yourself that people should know if they want to get to know you better?  Explain with details.

Something people should know about me if they want to get to know me better is that I am not very talkative unless I need to for school work. So if it is a group assignment then that’s when I would have to talk for school work but if it’s outside of class and a talk personally I don’t talk unless we are friends or we get along.
